The tension between the Vatican and the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) is causing harm to the church in a several hidden ways. This drama, at its core is a question every Catholic must answer: Who has authority in the Church Christ founded?

The SSPX often frames its resistance as fidelity to tradition. But resistance to the living authority of the Church doesn’t safeguard tradition—it undermines it.

Defiance Is Not a Catholic Virtue

Christ didn’t leave behind a loose federation of theologians. He established a visible Church and entrusted governing and teaching authority to the apostles — authority that endures in the Magisterium.

He told St. Peter “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church” (Matthew 16:18). To the apostles collectively: “He who hears you hears me” (Luke 10:16). Authority in the Church is not self-assumed; it is given. Something more Catholic laity need to keep in mind, as sufficient understanding of this core Catholic principal seems to be disappearing even amongst those in the pews. (Continues below)

Public defiance of the Church’s lawful authority teaches ordinary Catholics a dangerous lesson: that obedience is conditional upon personal agreement. But Scripture does not present obedience as optional. In Acts 15 (Council of Jerusalem), when doctrinal confusion arose, the matter was settled by the apostles in council. The faithful did not splinter into factions claiming private fidelity to “the old ways.” They received the judgment of the Church.

In the narrative, we even see James—another apostle, and bishop of Jerusalem—not refusing or resisting Peter’s judgement, but declaring how he would enact it in his diocese.

After there had been much debate, Peter rose and said to them,
“Brethren, you know that in the early days God made choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe.”

And all the assembly kept silence, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul as they related what signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles.

After they finished speaking, James replied,
“Brethren, listen to me…Therefore my judgment is that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who turn to God.”

Well the Holy Spirit appears to have done it yet again. There’s another millennial on the road to sainthood. His story is inspiring, striking, and tragic. If those aren’t the pillars of a saint, I don’t know what are. So let me introduce you to Joe Wilson—you may be venerating him some day.

Born in 1994 in the small Scottish town of Carfin, Joe Wilson seemed like any other teenager. He went to school, hung out with friends, and navigated the typical challenges of adolescence in the modern world. But the people who knew him saw something different about him.

"He always had a positive outlook on everything. Everybody that was having problems just seemed to go to Joe… and he'd always listen. He seemed to have an answer for everything as well. He was very positive in life and I think a lot of people were drawn in by that”

“That’s What a Saint Looks Like”

Friends and teachers had long recognized something special about Joe. In one particularly striking moment, a religion teacher asked her class what a modern saint might look like. Without hesitation, everybody pointed pointed to Joe.

What made him stand out?

It wasn’t dramatic miracles or grand gestures. It was simple holiness, expressed in simple ways. Joe was known for his deep devotion to prayer. He spent many hours at Carfin Grotto, a Marian shrine in Carfin offering his prayers for the intentions of others he’d promised to pray for.

He was also devoted to the Holy Rosary, and attended daily Mass. This was not an ordinary 17 year old spirituality!

When Joe died suddenly at just 17 in December 2011 from an undiagnosed heart condition, his community was devastated. But what they discovered in the months and years that followed would eventually put this Scottish prayer warrior on a path to sainthood.

The Hidden Diary

After Joe’s death, his father made a remarkable discovery. Tucked away in the back pages of Joe’s school notebooks were diary entries—powerful and deep spiritual reflections that Joe had been writing from age 14. These weren’t meant for anyone else’s eyes. They were the private thoughts of a teenager trying to understand faith, suffering, and God’s presence.

One entry, written just days before his unexpected death, revealed wisdom far beyond his years:

“I know the world ain’t gonna be perfect and that’s why I love having faith. Just think of all the people who were starving, in wars, famines, were excluded, were tortured, were not loved in the world. All these people who were unfortunate on Earth are, I am certain, sitting on the highest thrones of Heaven — how reassuring is that?”

And on the Mass, and the faith

“After going to Mass on Sunday I feel I have ‘returned home.’ I’ve gone back to where I belong.”

“I know that faith doesn’t make life easy, but it does make it meaningful.”

These writings gave Joe’s family and friends a window into the deep interior life he had cultivated quietly, without fanfare or recognition.

The Road to Sainthood

In November 2025, Scottish bishops approved the opening of Joe Wilson’s cause for beatification. With this decision, Joe received the title “Servant of God”—the first formal step on the long road to canonization.

If he’s canonized, he would join Carlo Acutis as the second millennial saint.

The emergence of these young saints speaks to something important: holiness isn’t reserved for another era or a different kind of person. It’s possible here, now, in the midst of ordinary life.

Don’t try to be the William Wallace of Catholic life. Be more like Joe Wilson. Holiness is simple—let it be simple as you attain it and live it.

Joe Wilson’s story reminds us that saints aren’t born; they’re made through small, faithful choices repeated day after day.The world may soon recognize what Joe’s classmates already knew: they had a saint among them.

Sometimes we think we’re doing God a favor by praying, or by going to mass. We may even try to spite or punish him by refusing to pray, refusing to worship, refusing to follow him. It’s as if we recognize our own value, and leverage our worth against God. We recognize something true, but apply it in a way that is false. We are indeed worth a lot to God. But God doesn’t need you, he desires you, and there’s a big difference.

Created in His Image

In the creation narratives of Genesis, we see our unique value established from the very beginning. While God speaks the rest of creation into existence—”Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3), “Let the earth bring forth vegetation” (Genesis 1:11)—when it comes to humanity, there’s a dramatic shift. God says,

“Let us make man in our image, after our likeness”
Genesis 1:26

We alone bear the divine image, the imago Dei. The sun and moon reflect God’s glory, the animals show His creativity, but only humanity reflects God Himself.

Then in Genesis 2:7, we see an even more intimate act:

“The Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.”

God doesn’t breathe life into the animals or plants, but only into us. We are dust animated by divine breath, matter infused with the spirit of God. This is our unique dignity: we are the only creatures made in God’s image, the only ones who receive the breath of life directly from His mouth, the only ones given dominion over creation (Genesis 1:28), and the only ones with whom God walks and speaks in intimate relationship (Genesis 3:8).

How Much God Values Us

Scripture frequently shows just how much God values us, and the Holy Spirit seems to go out of His way to communicate this in powerful imagery that moves this value-measurement out of abstraction and theory, and into connectable, heartfelt realities. The Psalmist marvels,

“What is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor”
-Psalm 8:4-5

Jesus Himself tells us that we’re valuable to God:

“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows”
-Matthew 10:29-31

God’s attention to detail regarding our lives is staggering—He knows us so intimately that it’s like every hair on our head is counted.

Then there’s the prophet Isaiah who reassures us of God’s comfort: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes” (Revelation 21:4, echoing Isaiah 25:8), showing that God cares about every sorrow we experience. And in Psalm 139:13-14, David writes, “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” We are not accidents or afterthoughts—we are fearfully and wonderfully crafted by God Himself, known by Him before we even drew our first breath.

Desired, Not Needed

We are the apple of God's eye. He desires us, but he doesn't need us. He is complete, whole, and lacking nothing. All the more reason why it should amaze us that while needing nothing, he still desires a relationship with us.

He so desires us that he sent his Son to die for us, so that, being freed from the bonds of sin, we have an opportunity to have a relationship with him now and to be with him forever in heaven.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life”
-John 3:16

“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” -Romans 5:8

An Encounter with…Water?

God’s desire—the desire of his heart—is deep and mysterious but also simple. When Jesus encounters the woman at the well (John 4:1-42), he asked for something very simple—a cup of water. I have said this before, but though it’s only a cup of water, it’s not so simple as a cup of water. In that moment a cup of water was His heart’s desire. And the heart of Jesus (God) is infinitely deep. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink” (John 4:7), and later, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water” (John 4:10).

Snotty Little Child!

At every level of our faith experience, we can be tempted to deny God his heart’s desire. Whether it’s our full attention, our devotion, our praise, or our worship, we can find ourselves withholding ourselves from God, or giving him less than what he wants. I do this all the time when I’m too “busy” to pray or too lazy to be all-in in my spirituality. When I do that, I’m not giving him all that he wants. And in the process I’m actually hurting myself.

Then there are those who dangle themselves in front of God almost as if to taunt him. “Give me what I ask, and then I’ll give you what you want.” We sure know how to be snotty little children! Recall the Jews in the wilderness who, even after witnessing God’s deliverance from Egypt, grumbled and tested Him: “Is the Lord among us or not?” (Exodus 17:7). I kind of want to be there when God comes down to them to say “Hey, I don’t need you, big shot. Remember that. I desire you. It’s you who needs me. Get that straight!” Eh! Thankfully God isn’t from Brooklyn, because we Brooklyn-kind usually come out swinging like that. He’s more merciful and patient. Maybe he’s from Oklahoma.

God is patient. Let’s not exploit that. Give God his heart’s desire. Give him yourself—your time, your prayer, your worship, your attention. Be good to him. Look how good he is to you.

“The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made” (Psalm 145:8-9).

In an essay talking about how God doesn’t need us, but desires us, I talked a bit about Jesus’ encounter with the woman at the well, when he said: “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water” (John 4:10). It sounds beautiful but a bit cryptic. Let’s go over what’s really happening.

Role Reversal

Notice the role reversal going on here. Jesus asks her for water—a simple, physical need. Then he flips it: “If you only knew who I really am, you’d be the one asking me for water.”

The woman thinks she’s in the position of power. She has the bucket, she knows the well, this Jewish stranger needs something from her. But Jesus reveals that true need runs in the opposite direction. She’s the one who’s really thirsty, even if she doesn’t know it yet.

I’ve met too many folks from Ireland who talk about reclaiming Ireland’s pagan past. It’s not even a rare thing anymore, it seems to be weaving its way throughout modern Irish human culture. They practically celebrate the decline of Catholicism in Ireland, and in Irish culture while speaking romantically about Ireland’s ancient pagan past—as if it was more Irish.

When they describe those old ways, you’d think they were describing life in the Shire in a Tokien story. Stone cottages in green valleys. Communal fires and shared bread. Pipe smoke and fairytale songs. Wise druids in harmony with nature. A people unburdened by Rome’s hierarchy or the Church’s guilt. Just mist, memory, and ancient Celtic wisdom.

It’s a beautiful picture except that it’s a lie.

The problem isn’t so much that people remember pagan Ireland fondly. The problem is that they’re remembering something that never existed. They’ve swapped history for fantasy, and they don’t even realize it.

Let me tell you what pagan Ireland actually was.

Brutal!

Pre-Christian Ireland—Iron Age Ireland, up to the 5th century—wasn’t a nation. It wasn’t a peaceful federation of tribes living in harmony with the land. It was a patchwork of warring kingdoms called tuatha, each one fighting for survival, status, and cattle.

Cardinal Sarah is talking about one of the great paradoxes of modern history. And if you’re paying attention, you can see it playing out right now.

When Nietzsche came down from his pedestal to proclaim to us simple minded folk that “God is dead”, he wasn’t just trying to be edgy. He was diagnosing Western culture. The uniting Christian framework that held everything together—meaning, morality, Truth, the very concept of the human person—had dissolved. The Enlightenment intellectuals saw this collapse coming and thought, “Finally! We can be free!”

The logic seemed sound: Remove the external authority—Scripture, commandments, religious tradition, the Church telling you what to do—and people could finally define their own values, create their own meaning, write their own moral codes. We’d be autonomous. Self-legislating. Masters of our fate, captains of our souls.

Ah ha! Well thank the non-gods for that! Except here’s what actually happened

Without God as the foundation for human dignity, human worth became arbitrary as persons are worth what a secular authority says they’re worth: the elderly are burdensome, the disabled are worthless because they can’t contribute, and an unborn baby is a problematic clump of cells. If there’s no transcendent source that says every person has inherent value, then value gets determined by whoever has power.

Why is slavery wrong? Why is exploitation evil? The civil rights movement appealed to higher moral law. They said every person bears the image of God and therefore has dignity that cannot be violated. Remove that foundation and you’re left with nothing but power politics.

The twentieth century proved this in blood. Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, Maoist China—explicitly atheistic regimes that claimed total authority over human life precisely because there was no higher law above them. No God meant no limit on the state. The body count topped 100 million.

But it doesn’t end with Communism. Look around you and you’ll see many of these same principals everywhere. Communism was simply a test bed or laboratory for the social experiment of godless secularism. Now, in America, abortion is normative, assisted suicide is legal and expanding, the religious are seen as annoyances and obstacles to social progress. We not only kicked God out of schools, we also regulate Him in the public square. And local and state governments are always finding ways to legally injure the Catholic Church, its schools, marginalize its people and “tax” or penalize Catholicism out of existence.

The compass metaphor is perfect.

Without a fixed point—true North—navigation becomes impossible. The intellectuals thought removing God would free humanity to chart its own course. But what it actually did was destroy the only reliable reference point we had.

God isn’t just a nice idea. God is the ground of reality itself. If God is the source and sustainer of being, then moving toward God is moving toward what’s real, what’s true, what we actually are. Trying to find happiness apart from our true nature is like a fish trying to find fulfillment out of water.

True freedom isn’t the absence of constraints. It’s alignment with reality. When we remove the origin of reality (God) from our lives, our homes, our culture, our nations, we aren’t liberated and empowered, we’re suffocated to death.

The Liturgy Wars are still raging, more than 50 years after the close of the Second Vatican Council. You might even say it rages hotter today than it ever has, with the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM, or Tridentine Mass) enjoying a brief heyday following Pope Benedict XVI’s motu proprio, Summorum Pontificum, only later to be effectively reversed by Pope Francis in his own motu proprio, Traditionis Custodes. Is the Novus Ordo a rupture of Sacred Tradition? Did the Roman Rite—the backbone of the Catholic Mass—undergo a change that practically protestantized the Mass?

In Part 1 of this short series I attempted to set the foundation for addressing these questions by first explaining what Sacred Tradition is and what it is not. Today, in Part 2, I want to explain what the Roman Rite is, take you through some of its history, and show how it shapes our liturgical life. Down the road in Part 3 we’ll take a little stroll through the Novus Ordo itself, and learn about the Church’s authority over the Mass.

Battle Lines Drawn (But in the Wrong Places)

When Catholics argue about the liturgy today, they’re usually talking past each other. And no, it’s not because one side wants guitars and felt banners while the other side is clutching their Latin missals for dear life. It’s because they’re not even talking about the same thing.

Here’s what I mean. Some Catholics act like the Roman Rite is this single, perfectly preserved Mass that came down from the apostles unchanged and stayed that way until the 1960s when everything went to hell in a handbasket. Others talk like the Mass is basically Play-Doh—moldable, adjustable, whatever works for the current pastoral vibe.

Both camps are wrong. And both miss what the Roman Rite actually is.

The Roman Rite isn’t a museum artifact you look at but can’t touch. It’s also not a blank canvas where the Church just paints whatever it feels like. It’s a living rite with a real history, real authority behind it, and real limits. And if we want to talk about it honestly, we need to understand what those things mean.

What Is the Roman Rite

Let's start simple. The Roman Rite is a specific liturgical system—a set of prayers, ceremonies, and ritual structures used to celebrate the sacraments. It originates from the Church of Rome, the church that St. Peter headed, the foundation of what we today call the Roman Catholic Church. This is the form of worship the Roman Church has used to celebrate the sacraments (especially the Eucharist) over the centuries. This tradition gradually spread from Rome throughout the Western Church, and today it's what most Catholics experience at Mass

But here’s the part people miss: the Roman Rite isn’t just one Mass. It’s a whole family of liturgical forms that share the same Roman roots.

That’s why you can have different historical versions of the Mass, different liturgical calendars, different ceremonial details—all under the Roman Rite umbrella. Different languages, different practices, different emphases. What ties them together isn’t that they look identical or sound identical. It’s that they share the same essential substance and operate under Roman authority.

Think of it like a family tree. You’ve got cousins who look nothing alike, dress differently, have different personalities—but they’re still family because they share the same ancestors and the same DNA.

Emerged, not Invented

In the earliest centuries of Christianity, there was no such thing as a single, universal liturgical script. What there was were shared theological essentials—the Eucharist, the words of institution, Scripture readings, prayer, sacrifice—that every local church celebrated, but they developed genuinely different liturgical rites from those foundations. The church in Antioch developed its own distinct liturgical form. Milan developed what became the Ambrosian Rite. And Rome? Rome developed what we now call the Roman Rite. These weren't just different flavors of the same recipe—they were genuinely different rites, each with its own prayers, structure, and character.

Think of it like this: if you visited different Christian communities in the 3rd or 4th century, you’d recognize the Mass everywhere you went. But you’d also notice differences in their respective forms. The church in Constantinople might have elaborate, poetic prayers that went on for paragraphs. Rome? Short, direct, to the point. No flowery language. Get in, worship, get out. Clean and simple.

That Roman personality—simple, sober, restrained—never went away. Even as the centuries rolled on and prayers were added and ceremonies became more developed, the Roman Rite kept that characteristic restraint. Concise prayers. Ordered structure. Theological clarity over poetic flourish.

This matters, because it means the Roman Rite has a personality—but not a single frozen form.

Latin Was a Tool, Not the Point

Let’s talk about Latin in the Roman Rite. This is a[n inexcusably] touchy subject that many Catholics get wrong. So I want to start off with some very blunt clarity before I go into the history and explanation: Latin did not define the Roman Rite. It served it. Latin is not part of the Deposit of Faith, it is not Sacred Tradition, and though the Roman Rite developed within Latin, the Latin language is not essential by its nature to the Roman Rite.

Why did Christians in Rome worship in Latin? Because that’s what people spoke. Latin was the vernacular. When you went to Mass in 3rd-century Rome, you heard Latin for the same reason you hear English at an American parish today—because that’s the language people understand.

But as Latin faded and died out in everyday life, liturgical Latin stuck around. Not because it was mystical or magical, but because it was stable, precise, and widely shared across the Western Church. That stability became a real strength—Latin preserved theological clarity and kept the Church unified across different cultures and languages.

But—and this is crucial—Latin was never the substance of the rite itself. It was a vehicle, a tool, a common language. Important? Yes. Essential to what makes the Roman Rite “Roman”? No. I’m not anti-Latin, but it does not make the Roman Rite more Roman Rite-y, it just makes it more roamin’ Righty.
(I know how corny that is but I really couldn’t resist taking a swing at a little wisecrack there. Too inviting!)

Trent Did Not Create a New Mass

Let’s talk about the Council of Trent, because this gets misunderstood constantly. People treat Trent like it either saved the Mass from complete destruction or locked it in a time capsule for 400 years. Neither is true

Here’s what actually happened. After the Protestant Reformation—when the Mass was being denied, gutted, rewritten, or just tossed out entirely—the Church had to act. Pope St. Pius V promulgated the Roman Missal in 1570, but he wasn’t inventing something new. He was standardizing what was already there.

What he codified was ancient: a Mass that had been in continuous use for centuries, cleaned up from late medieval clutter and local improvisations, and stabilized to prevent doctrinal erosion. The so-called Tridentine Mass wasn’t an act of nostalgia. It was an act of discipline and protection.

And here’s something people forget: Pius V allowed ancient rites with at least 200 years of continuous use to continue alongside his standardized Missal. Yes, he suppressed some problematic local variations of the Mass that had crept in—that was the whole point of standardization. But he didn’t claim there was only one legitimate form of the Roman Rite that could ever exist. Ancient rites like the Ambrosian, Dominican, and Carmelite liturgies were explicitly permitted to remain. The Church clearly recognized that there wasn’t just one legitimate way to celebrate the Roman Rite.

Think about that for a second. If Trent really believed there was only one valid form of the Mass, why let other ancient rites continue? The answer is simple: because legitimacy isn’t about aesthetic uniformity. It’s about substance, authority, and continuity.

“Organic Development” Isn’t a Free Pass

People love throwing around the phrase organic development and using it as license for a host of Liturgical novelties that could even make Martin Luther blush. Really when used correctly, it’s a helpful concept. When used poorly—as it often is— it becomes a rhetorical shield—a way to justify whatever you already believed about the liturgy, which happens to be the root of every mass abuse. So let’s be clear: Organic Development isn’t a blank check for Liturgical novelty or creative editing. Even if it were, the Church—not the individual, whether pastor, celebrant, or layperson—has sole and exclusive authority to write and sign it.

So let’s be clear about what organic development does not mean:

• It doesn’t mean “no pruning” This happens with the Liturgy all the time, across the Church’s history.

• It doesn’t mean “no reform”

• It doesn’t mean “the Church can’t intervene”

• It doesn’t mean “everything that develops naturally is good and should stay forever”

Organic development means continuity of substance alongside legitimate change of form. The Roman Rite developed organically because the Church governed it—adding prayers when needed, removing redundancies, revising calendars, simplifying rubrics, responding to real pastoral needs.

Left entirely alone, rites don’t stay pure and perfect. They sprawl. They accumulate. They get messy and confusing. A garden doesn’t stay beautiful without a gardener. Neither does a rite.

The Roman Rite Has Always Changed — Carefully

Between Trent and Vatican II, the Roman Rite kept evolving, though subtly. Calendars were revised. Rubrics were simplified. The entire Holy Week liturgy was significantly reworked in the 1950s—and nobody screamed “rupture from Tradition!!”

In fact none of this was treated as betrayal. It was stewardship. It was the Church doing what it’s always done: governing the liturgy with care (I’ll talk more about that in Part 3), making adjustments where needed, preserving what’s essential.

The real historical pattern isn’t “perfect unchanging stasis followed by sudden catastrophic rupture.” It’s measured, careful, authoritative reform carried out with theological awareness and prudence. That distinction is easy to forget when you’re caught up in liturgy wars—but it’s absolutely critical if we want to talk about this stuff honestly.

Descent Matters More Than Aesthetics

Here’s one of the most important things I want readers to understand if you’re going to think clearly about the Roman Rite: the legitimacy of a liturgical form isn’t measured by how old it looks but by whether it descends from the Church’s received tradition under legitimate authority1.

The Tridentine Mass (like the Novus Ordo) matters because it’s a genuine heir of the Roman Rite. Its prayers, gestures, structure—they all grow out of centuries of Roman worship. It has real roots, real substance, real continuity.

But that doesn’t mean the Tridentine Mass exhausts the Roman Rite. It doesn’t mean every liturgical form that came after it is automatically illegitimate or fabricated out of thin air.

Descent, authority, continuity of substance are the real criteria. Not our aesthetic preferences. Not what feels more “traditional” to you or me. Not whether you like Gregorian chant or folk guitars2.

If we’re going to argue about the liturgy then let’s at least argue about the right things.

Understanding the Roman Rite as a living, governed tradition prepares us for the harder question — the one most liturgical arguments are actually about:

Who has authority over the liturgy, and what are its limits?

There’s a familiar and growing trend today: people who proudly identify as Catholic while rarely — if ever — practicing the faith. They treasure the cultural identity, the family memories, the warm associations… but not the sacraments, not the moral transformation, not the mission of the Gospel. They are “cultural Catholics.” They aren’t all bad. Sometimes Cultural Catholicism is the thread they hold on to that keeps them connected to the Church; a thread that could lead them back to the Church. But there are also Cultural Catholic who aren’t holding on to a thread at all, their Catholic Identity is just lip service.

While we pray for them and want them home, this reflection isn’t directed at them. This is for those who are already showing up.

Those who make room in their week for Mass. Those who pull into the parish parking lot even on the days when every excuse whispers “not today.” Those who choose Confession even when it means admitting what’s uncomfortable. Those who pray when no one sees — who wrestle, who repent, who keep beginning again.

You already know what it means to be on the field, not just in the stands. You’ve chosen not only the Catholic identity, but the life that comes with it. And because of that, I want to encourage you.

Your Faithfulness Isn’t Small — It Moves Heaven

We live in a world drowning in moral, philosophical, and spiritual confusion. In that world, simply remaining faithful is an act of rebellion against the darkness. Each time you choose honesty over convenience, virtue over vice, worship over comfort, charity over cynicism, you are pushing back the night. You Give the Church Her Credibility

A Church full of cultural Catholics can shout its doctrines all day long, but who will listen if no one is living them? Who will believe it if it’s just lip service? The Gospel becomes believable only when hearts are changed, and the people who take this faith seriously are the ones who make that witness possible. You don’t demonstrate the credibility and power of the faith by your arguments, but by your lives. The best evidence for the evil of communism is the communist uprising. The best evidence for the goodness and power of the Catholic Faith is her saints (or her saints-in-the-making).

The Church’s reputation in the world is upheld by those who are letting Christ reshape them, daily and painfully. That means you.

Holiness Is Hard for a Reason

Being Catholic isn’t supposed to be easy the moment you start taking it seriously. If the path feels steep, that’s a sign you’re on it. The saints didn’t get holy by being comfortable. They were refined by surrender, by virtuous habit, by perseverance. Christ doesn’t ask for admiration. He asks for change. And real change demands we cooperate with grace, even when it hurts.

Sometimes you’ll feel like you’re failing more than you’re succeeding. But only those who are fighting notice the wounds. The ones who are coasting rarely feel the weight of their armor.

Take heart: if Catholic life feels like work, it’s working.

Keep Going. We Need You.

If you’ve ever wondered whether your efforts matter because the world seems so loud and your life so ordinary, please hear this: your fidelity strengthens the entire Body of Christ. Your hidden yeses honor the martyrs. Your struggles remind the Church what discipleship actually looks like. Your obedience is helping keep the light of the Gospel shining in a world that has forgotten the sun.

So do not stop. Do not settle. Do not think for a moment that God is overlooking what costs you something. The banner you hold? You’ve earned the right to carry it and you keep earning that right every time you rise again and continue the climb toward Heaven.

I’m always telling you to stay fired up, Catholics. But here’s a reality check. Sometimes it’s hard to keep that fire burning when the Church herself seems to put it out. Sometimes people are hurt by the Church. And even those whom God was raising up as saints can tell that story, often better than we can.

That’s not a theoretical problem. It’s not something only critics bring up. It’s part of our actual history. And if we pretend otherwise, we end up offering shallow answers to people with very real wounds.

What defines us when we feel hurt by the Church is not our paint, but what we do in response to it. One of the most common mistakes I see is people take a bad experience with Church authority—a priest, a bishop, a superior—and turn it into a verdict against the Church as an institution. The saints give us a different way to think about it.

Here are four of them.

Padre Pio

Padre Pio was silenced by Church authorities. For years he was forbidden from celebrating Mass publicly or hearing confessions. The suspicions raised against him turned out to be wrong. Those suspicions centered on allegations of emotional manipulation of the faithful, fostering unhealthy spiritual dependency, possible fraud regarding his stigmata, and concerns that his phenomena were psychological or self-inflicted rather than supernatural. Church authorities acted out of caution and fear of scandal, but subsequent investigations failed to substantiate these claims, and the restrictions were eventually lifted. But here’s the thing to focus on: While they were in force, he obeyed. He didn’t rally supporters, he didn’t turn into a rebel. He didn’t wage a public campaign. He suffered quietly—and the Church eventually lifted the restrictions and later canonized him.

St. Joan of Arc

was condemned and executed by a Church court that was corrupt, politically manipulated, and operating in violation of Church law. She was put on trial by an ecclesiastical court controlled by English authorities after her capture, with the goal of discrediting her visions and undermining the legitimacy of the French crown. She was accused of heresy, false revelation, and disobedience to the Church—charges later judged to be unjust, procedurally invalid, and politically motivated.

This was a betrayal of justice by local Church authority, despite the Vatican and Church law. And yet, years later, the Church overturned the verdict, acknowledged the injustice, and declared Joan a saint.

St. John of the Cross

John of the Cross was imprisoned, beaten, and starved by fellow religious for supporting a legitimate reform within his own order. His suffering didn’t come from enemies of the Church, but from men convinced they were defending tradition. Some of the greatest mystical writings in Christian history came out of that dark cell. God can do something great, even with our pain! St. John’s “Dark Night of the Soul” was a big contributor to my own spiritual life!

St. Athanasius

And then there’s St. Athanasius. He was exiled again and again for opposing Arianism and defending the full divinity of Christ—even after the Church had already authoritatively defined that teaching at the Council of Nicaea. Athanasius wasn’t pushing a novelty. He was defending what the Church herself had formally taught, while large parts of her leadership failed to live consistently with it. Pay attention and you’ll see this sort of thing still happens today, with Catholics imposing their opinions against the authoritative teaching, guidance or declarations of the Church.

So what do we do with that?

First, we keep our categories straight. The Church’s teaching authority, sacramental life, and divine mission don’t always equate to prudence, competence, or virtue in the people who exercise authority at any given moment. So don’t confuse The Church with “people in the Church”. Confusing those categories leads either to naïve idealism or total disillusionment—neither of which is helpful.

First, we shouldn’t pretend that being hurt by Church authorities means someone is weak, bitter, or unserious. Saints were hurt this way. Deeply. Repeatedly. There are those cases where stories are embellished or completely made up, but there are also real and true stories of events that have injured someone, which may be “nothing” events for some, but deep painful for others.

Second, we learn to live with mess without assuming the faith itself is broken. The Catholic experience is messy. Church history shows that the Church can teach the truth clearly and still handle things badly at times. Councils can get doctrine right while leaders hesitate, compromise, or make poor decisions. That gap is frustrating—but it’s not a reason to conclude that the Church’s teaching has failed or that Christ abandoned what He founded.

And third, we learn from how the saints responded. None of them abandoned the Church. Not because the treatment was acceptable, but because they understood that walking away was not an option. The Church is True, but agents in the Church can be flawed. Follow the Church (her teachings, the sacramental life, etc.) and don’t let bad agents knock you off course.

If you’ve been wounded by the Church, you’re not alone. You’re standing in a long line that includes saints. The fire doesn’t go out because of bad stewards. Sometimes it just burns underground for a while, until it breaks through again, purified and stronger.
